Housebuilding 101

We had our "This Old Gingerbread House" contest again last Saturday. This will be the third time we've loaded the table with graham crackers, icing, and candy, and turned the kids loose to make their creations. It is quickly becoming a family tradition, something they look forward to every year.

Last year, we had a hard time keeping the walls of the house standing, so this year Joann researched gingerbread house building. Turns out that if you add cream of tartar to the icing, it helps the walls to stand firmer. Don't know if it helped, though, because we had at least two structural failures. At least the candy tasted good.

As they're sitting around the table laughing, licking icing off their fingers, and talking about last year's houses, I'm reminded how much they've changed in the course of a year. Too soon they'll find the contest to be something they've outgrown. This tradition helps remind me to enjoy the here and now.
