Crazy Love

My Sunday school class is reading Francis Chan's Crazy Love, and I'm not going to lie, it's been challenging. Especially chapters 4 and 5. In chapter 4, Chan profiles the lukewarm people referred to in Revelation, but never refers to them as Christians. The big idea: lukewarm people live lives of comfort, never fully giving of themselves, never fully following Jesus's command to "Take up your cross and follow me." Instead, lukewarm people give only when it's easy, love conditionally, rarely think about the poor, do what they need to do to avoid feeling guilty, and need to feel as if they are in control. In short, lukewarm people live lives that wouldn't look much different if they suddenly quit believing in God.
In chapter 5, Chan goes on to say that the term lukewarm Christian is an oxymoron; there's no such thing. The title of the chapter interestingly enough is "Serving Leftovers to a Holy God."
This book has compelled me to ask myself some tough questions. I can't wait for this week's lesson. The big idea: through the Holy Spirit's work in our lives we can learn to love Him more. Great love is the cure for lukewarm living.
